Artist Statement

Jamae (she / siya) creates from a foundation of constant curiosity, with particular interest in site-based movement, floor work, improvisation, free verse poetry, urban fantasy, and microfiction. Through dance and writing, she asks “Why do we do what we do?” while making connections between seemingly dissimilar disciplines, such as performance art, sustainability, literature, and social justice.

Her aim is to tease out complexities by examining their simplest forms while also forming organic connections. Like a clock operating because of its many gears, movement is the physical product of its collective parts—energy, stillness, intention, story, presence, and community. Taking these individual pieces apart, Jamae wants to not only know how each works alone but also find what makes them work together.

In addition, writing is the connector between each individual’s inner worlds. As Stephen King shares in On Writing, writing is telepathy, where an idea can be transferred from the transmitter (the writer) to the receiver (the reader) without speaking aloud. Jamae finds value in these transactions because the written word offers individuals the space to relate at the most human level.

By building upon this philosophy through her studied practice, she hopes to unearth new possibilities in collaboration with community to share the process, product, and future potential in both fields with other like-minded creatives.
